about

This is the first song we've recorded (beyond live rehearsal). Our friend Elisa Ferrari invited us to interpret some found lyrics and contribute to an art project she was developing. John Brennan engineered the session over the course of half an hour at VIVO Media Arts Centre, Vancouver, on April 14, 2014.

Here is Elisa's statement about the project (and her explanation about where the lyrics come from):

"On July 16 2013, on my way to work, I noticed a big truck parked in the back alley of 1965 Main Street, Vancouver.

Three men were filling the trunk of the vehicle with rocks, suitcases, vintage radios and bags of handwritten papers carefully folded into small cubes and wrapped in plastic. I vaguely knew about the recent death of the owner of those materials from a previous conversation with Paul Wong.

Mel (19??-2013) was a hoarder who rented 3 storage units at Alderbridge Storage for almost 21 years. As the movers were emptying Mel's storage units, I unfolded one of his pieces of paper. This is what was written on it:

My new song

Oh I love rock n’roll
just because we’re young
oh I wish that these
good times
last long long time

Oh I love rock n’roll
I love you very much
just because we’re
young

so come on come sweet
baby
let’s go to a
nice party

In April, 2014, on the occasion of Through The Trap Door - an exhibition taking place in the now-closed Alderbridge Storage - I asked ten different musicians and sound artists to compose and interpret the lyrics of Mel's new song.

A playlist with the resulting songs was transmitted to a radio placed in one of the storage units that Mel used to rent. A sealed collection of Mel's artifacts and notes was exhibited in the same room."
